We’ve all been digitalized. It was inevitable, but with the pandemic forcing our learning online, we were forced into it sooner. For the Dawson College 2022 Graphic Design Vernissage Poster, there was no better way to encapsulate the first one back in person by looking back at the absurdity of online learning.

The avatar came to mind first when brainstorming my concept. It’s a representation of our online presence and it’s become even more relevant in recent years. The idea that struck me the most was the anonymity that having an avatar brings, or lack thereof when forced to continue our education online. There’s this uncanny disconnect between knowing the people you go to school with and seeing them through a computer screen. It feels wrong. Thus, my original character of The Avatar, was born through this thought process.

The uncanny feeling this character’s gaze invokes reflects the same one we’ve been feeling doing online learning for the past 3 years. There’s always a human behind the avatar, but it’s often hard to see.
