Plat du Jour is the seminal album from electronic artist Matthew Herbert. He sampled hundreds of sounds from various foods to create his magnum opus about the destructiveness of the food industry and consumerism. This poster was designed for a show he would be performing at SAT in Montreal.
I approached this to design by listening to the music ad nauseam; every day for hours on end. As I began to familiarize myself with the world of Plat du Jour, I entered my experimentation phase: creating textures, mark-makings, and colour palettes that represent the sound of the album visually. As it evolved, these textures became sketches, which then became concepts. As much as his commentary on the food industry is poignant, it’s also satirical, so I decided to embrace that side of the album.
After the poster had been created, I realized that this album did not get a physical release on vinyl. This lead me to adapt the visual language of the poster into a vinyl record that could potentially be sold at his shows.
