This New York Times article began with just the text, which followed a tale of weather control experiments being conducted in Dubai. My team’s mandate was to create a handmade, 3D paper illustration to compliment the article, as well as the layout.

After much brainstorming, my team and I landed on the concept of a weather machine, which was the first part of the illustration we built. Once it was complete, we moved on to the sand dunes and the background; this was our biggest challenge. We went through many iterations before deciding on our final one. When our set had been constructed, we set up our camera and began experimenting with lighting options until we settled on the perfect settings. Once the construction had been shot, I created a layout that would represent the article best while not taking too much attention away from the visual.

Manipulation of the weather has serious implications. By representing it in as a "toy", we managed to draw attention to the issues being raised in the article while not making it seem too dire. We believed that a concept as absurd as weather manipulation should be taken seriously, but also poked fun at for its absurdity.
